While there are many mask options out there, the most important thing to remember is to wash your hands to help spread the virus. However, when it comes to masks, there are so many options out there. Which one works best for you? As many places now require masks (and in general if you are going to be around others, it is a good idea these days), Twist wants to make sure you are prepared and know which solution is best for your needs:
N95 and KN95
Both of these types of masks are used in healthcare settings where a higher level of protection is needed/required. It is not recommended for the general public.
But, what is the difference? Both refer to the regulatory standards that they filter out at least 95% of very small particles (0.3 micron particles). N95 is the standard used in the U.S., while KN95 refers to a standard in China. There are a few key differences in the standards. KN95 masks have to pass a special mask fit test on real humans while the N95 doesn’t require manufacturers to run fit tests (many hospitals do require workers to be fit-tested though). Another difference is that N95 masks are required to be slightly more breathable than KN95 masks.
These masks should only be used once (although when there was a shortage of surgical masks, there were some healthcare professionals being required to seal them in a bag and re-use after 72 hours).
You can order KN95 masks from Twist HERE.
Disposable masks (surgical or procedure masks)
These masks cannot be washed, and should only be used once These are the typically blue masks (sometimes white) that you see doctors on TV wearing. They are made in different thicknesses and protect healthcare workers from contact with splashes. The general public is using these now too, and many businesses are giving them out to customers who come in without a mask. This is a good option when nothing else is available and social distancing cannot be maintained. You can order these masks from Twist HERE OR get more details on them via this flyer.
Cotton masks, while not for the medical field, are great options for everyday use and can be washed and reused (eco-friendly). There are sooo many different kinds of cotton masks out there as anyone can make one. It is recommended that you choose a 2-ply mask over a 1-ply mask for added protection. The double-layer has been shown to be significantly better than the 1-ply at reducing droplet spread from coughing and sneezing. The tightness of the weave is also very important. If you hold the mask up to light and can easily see the individual fibers, it isn’t a great filtering option. Also remember that proper fit is one of the most important aspects of ANY mask—without a good fit, you don’t get the best protection.
As an added bonus, you can also turn it into an accessory OR branding for your company. Do you need customized masks for your employees? Or, do you want to give them out as a promo to your customers? Masks can now be walking billboards advertising your company! Reach out to us today for more information as Twist has many options for your business or organization!
In COVID settings, many healthcare workers use both a N95 and a face shield. Face Shields have become even more popular lately in educational settings where educators feel it is important that students can see their mouths. They have also been good alternatives for those with medical issues preventing mask wearing. If a face shield is used without a mask, they should wrap around the sides of the wearer’s face and extend to below the chin. Reusable face shields should be cleaned and disinfected after each use.
