Pulp Truth: Can I Recycle This?

Paper is the most recycled material in the U.S. today. And while recovery rates remain high, so too do misconceptions around what you can and cannot put into the recycling bin. The good news? The majority of municipalities are well equipped to handle just about anything. So the next time you pause before hitting the “print” button, or select electronic statements thinking you’re doing the environment a favor, consider that paper and packaging aren’t wasteful when recycled properly.

Embrace the bin; you can recycle more than you think.

What goes into the bin:

·       White and colored paper from home, school or the office. Includes writing paper, copy paper, office folders, notebooks, stationary, etc.

·       Cereal and dry food boxes, shoe boxes, laundry detergent boxes, etc.

·       All mail and envelopes (including those with windows), postcards, greeting cards, coupon packets, etc.

·       Boxes used for over-the-counter medicine, cosmetics or perfume; bakery or candy boxes; takeout food containers or beverage cups; pizza and frozen food boxes

·       Corrugated cardboard boxes used for packaging or shipping

·       Paper shopping bags from retail stores, grocery stores and restaurants

·       Magazines and catalogs with glossy paper (no need to remove staples; paper mills today can handle that)

·       Newspaper and newspaper inserts

·       Juice, milk and aseptic cartons

·       Telephone directories (just remove any plastic bags and magnets first)

·       Hardcover or softcover books, wrapping paper (including the cardboard tube), old business cards, etc.

Remember:

1.    Every municipality is different. For example, cities across the country have varying guidelines to recycle pizza boxes. In addition to removing non-paper inserts or additional packaging (adhesive coupons, etc.) as well as any food residue, check your local recycling rules to see what other guidelines are in place.

2.    Quality does matter. Try to remove all food residues and liquids from paper items before putting them in the bin. Make sure the item is clean and dry. Crumpled paper is still quality paper and goes into the recycling bin!

3.    Books typically contain adhesives in their binding. Look online to find programs in your area that will accept old books and recycle them. Some municipalities may require that you remove the spines of hardcover books prior to recycling.

Happy Talk Like a Pirate Day!

9/19/2015

Get hoistin’ the Jolly Roger, ye lily-livered landlubbers.

The change of seasons this week is a time for remembrance and self-reflection, and there’s a holiday nestled into the calendar today marking this pensive transition to autumn. We’re speaking, of course, of  Talk Like A Pirate Day.

Why hurl salty insults at your friends and loved ones today like you're a one-eyed raider of the high seas? The intent behind today’s holiday is for young and old alike to enjoy the seafaring dialects that first entered pop culture when "Treasure Island" was published in 1883 and peaked around the time Johnny Depp first appeared in "Pirates of the Caribbean" as Keith Richards’ flamboyant younger brother.

So go ahead and let the child in you swing down from the crow’s nest today and tell your boss he’s a lice-infested bilge rat. Threaten to twist his ears off and tell him he’s not fit to swab your poop deck.  It’ll be great. If you’re at a loss for words, try out this Insult-O-Matic translator in Pirate Mode.

"Talk Like A Pirate Day" be celebrated on September 19, 'n would-be buccaneers who'd be tryin' t' natter like a corsair had best learn t' speak th' lingo. If ye reckon that jus' sayin' "arrrr" at th' end o' every utterance will fill yer sails 'n float yer ship, reckon again, landlubber. It'll jus' get ye tossed o'erboard! So don't settle fer bein' an imitation pirate: learn how t' be authentic n' colorful, like a real swashbucklin' scallywag o' th' sea!

  1. Growl—and scowl—often. Pirates don't use a cultured, elegant, smooth vocalization. They growl, mutter, and scowl, all the better t' rattle yer timbers an' chill ye to th' bone.
  2. Use pirate lingo. Sounding like a pirate ain't hard t' do. Thar be lots o' fancy tools for picking up pirate lingo, includin' online dictionaries, even iPhone apps. Make use of them. Try to affect a swashbucklin' attitude with your delivery. There be nothin' as unconvincin' as a shy pirate. Avoid using modern epithets (swear words). It's much more colorful (and kid-friendly) to use "pirate slang" for those naughty words, or learn entire creative ways to say the same thing. For example, instead of saying somebody smells like dog droppings, say "Ye smell like ye been swimmin' in the bilge!"[1]
  3. Gesture with your hands frequently. If ye need t' be drivin' the point home, gesticulate! Don't forget that buccaneers do most of their natterin' on th' deck o' a ship—out on t' ocean, where wind, waves, n' bird calls make it tough t' hear. Gesturing often gives you a sense of "being there." Just be careful wavin' that hook around. Ye could put n' eye out!
  4. Never ever use "you" or "you're." Instead, use the piratical form, "yer", "ye" or "ya" for all forms of address to others. "Yer a scurvy bilge rat, ya pompous gasbag." or, "Here's yer dinner, ya mangey cockroach." Note that you should always endeavor to call the addressee by some insulting name, usually involving an animal, criminal, or noxious odor.
  5. Refer to yourself as "me" at all times, never "I." It is not piratically correct to say, "I have a cold." It is far better as a pirate to declare, "Got me a case o'th'sniffles, 'ass rye!" More importantly, substitute "me" for "my." For example, don't say, "Look at my new sword," say "Lookit me new sword!" Also substitute "meself" for "myself" as in "Got meself a right fine ship!"

Being and Office Supply Addict (OSA) is not a bad thing. I mean, it could be worse! And the first step is admitting, right?! Here at Twist Office Products we realize there’s a difference between knowing office supplies and being totally addicted to them. Our staff gets the itch to collect Post-Its and pencils in every color. And envelopes...and note cards...If this sounds like you, read on to see if you may be an OSA.

  • Forget coffee in the morning! OSAs love the smell of new markers.
  • Pen pals aren't who you write letters to...they're your pens.
  • You proudly wear ink smudges on your hands or clothing like they’re an accessory.
  • You could wallpaper your entire home with Post-It Notes...and have plenty left for the neighbor's house.
  • School supply shopping is your Christmas.
  • Your children's names are Avery, Bic, and Wilson.
  • Instead of counting sheep at night, bright and colorful erasers dance in your head.
  • For Halloween, you dressed up as a #2 pencil and handed out pens and Post-It notes.
  • During the holidays, you decorate your tree with origami ornaments made from Post-it notes and mini staplers.
  • There's nothing like writing with a brand new pen on a crisp piece of paper to lift your spirits when you're feeling blue.
  • You have a soft spot in your heart for red Swingline staplers. You may or may not have a stapler necklace...
  • Two words: pencil shoes.
  • There is a pair of boxers at your house that look like notebook paper.
  • Your desk accessories are fashioned after office supplies.

If you responded affirmatively to one or more of these, you are definitely an OSA. But don't seek help. We welcome you to the club!
