The 4 Types of Pen(tel) Addicts

6/30/2016

Picture
Pentel addicts come in many different shapes, sizes, and personalities. In fact, it’s kinda like The Breakfast Club minus the whole high school detention thing, and a whole lot more pens and stationery. Which of the four types of Pentel addicts are you? Let us know in the comments below.
The Hoarder
Hoarders love Pentel pens. Any of them. If they find a pen on the street, they pick it up. If someone loans them a pen to use, they keep it. They aren’t picky. In fact, even when they have used a pen to its last drop, they don’t get rid of it. Instead, they stash it away with all the rest of the pens they can no longer use.
The Evangelist
You know how some people can talk about a subject all day long? Well, for the Evangelists that topic is Pentel. They want to make sure that everyone know about the fine Pentel writing instruments that they use. If they see someone use a different brand of pen, they tell them to switch to Pentel. And who can blame them?
The Loyalist
The Loyalist knows what type of Pentel pen they like and don’t deviate from it. For example, if they use a Hybrid Technica for sketching, they will only use a Hybrid Technica. There are no substitutes. They trust what they know and know what they use.
The Giver
Ever been in a meeting and not have a pen? Well, the person who loaned you one in your time of need is the Giver. They have plenty of pens to go around. They also make sure to give Pens as gifts for every birthday, anniversary, or holiday. It’s almost as if they are the office’s resident pen supplier.

Suiting Your Business Needs
Furniture considerations for the office include many factors. You will need to first account for the number of offices or workstations you will need to provide for employees. Size is one of the biggest factors to consider, because it will inform how much space you can provide for computers, filing, and other equipment that might be necessary. The material and style will also affect your purchasing choices. Do you want hardwood or composites? Styles and shapes might need to be mixed and matched to utilize as much space as possible. Are You GHS Compliant?  Time is running out!

6/23/2016

Picture
It’s been awhile that changes were made to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Hazard Communications Standard, also known as the ‘right to know’ regulation. GHS stands for the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals. It was developed by the United Nations and its goal is to standardize and harmonize the classification and labeling of chemicals to give universally understood warnings to users. The three major areas of impact are:
  1. Hazard Classification: Definitions of hazard now include specific criteria for classifying health and physical hazards as well as classification of mixtures. It will result in more accurate safety data sheets.
  2. Labels: Chemical manufacturers, importers and distributors must use labels that include a harmonized signal word, pictograms and hazard statement for each hazard class and category. Precautionary statements must also be provided.
  3. Safety Data Sheets: Now have a specific 16-section standardized format.
For many companies, the new regulations were looked over and then largely forgotten about. If that is the case for you, consider this your wakeup call!

You now have less than a year to get in compliance with these regulations, and if you fail to do so you can be subject to fines and other penalties. According to OSHA, the deadline for compliance is June 1, 2016. Employers need to have all their workplace labeling procedures in place and the employees trained by this date in order to avoid problems.

The chemical labeling requirements are fairly specific so it is a good idea to learn about them as soon as possible.

The diagram below shows an example of the main elements of a GHS label.

Picture
  • Product Identifier – This will identify what the product in the container is. Should match the product identifier on SDS.
  • Signal Word – Signal words like ‘CAUTION’ or ‘WARNING’ need to be in large print. These  Indicate relative severity of hazard
  • Hazard Statement – A statement describing the specific hazard is for the materials within the container.
  • Pictogram – Symbols to convey health, physical and environmental information
  •  The pictograms help improve visual communication and allow people to quickly understand the risk even if they can’t read the print on the label. This is important when viewing containers from some distance away.
  • Identifier - Name, address, telephone number of supplier
  • Precautionary Statement – This statement will let people know what measures they should take when working with this hazardous material to minimize / prevent effects of the hazard, including First Aid. Things like wearing gloves or respiratory equipment can be mentioned here.

To aid in compliance
Avery has created a new line of UltraDutyTM GHS chemical labels to simplify the labeling update process. As their name suggests, these labels are tough and can withstand chemicals, UV light, water, and extreme temperatures. The adhesive used on the labels is marine-grade, and the labels passed the 90-day sea-water submersion test. In addition, the labels are tear- and scuffresistant, so frequent use will not compromise their integrity.

Avery also makes the label customization and printing process easier and more efficient with its Design & Print GHS Online Wizard, which is provided at no cost. This online application allows users to create customized, professional GHS-compliant labels from templates and print them in-house with a desktop printer. Using Avery’s labels and the GHS Online Wizard not only guarantees that users will be compliant with OSHA’s GHS standards, but it also helps employees identify and track chemicals, and helps companies comply with other labeling standards.

Making the Most of Summer Produce:

How to use up your CSA or farmers market haul

Whether you signed up for a CSA and are now overwhelmed with kale, or you just got a little too ambitious at the farmers market, sometimes the bounty of summer produce can get the best of you. Don't let the zucchini call the shots! You can be the master of your summer produce – here's how.

Keep a master list
If you're just prone to forgetting what you have, an easy fix is to make a list of everything you bought (or got in your CSA box) on the front of the fridge. Grab a pad of 4 in x 6 in Post-it® Super Sticky Lined Notes and slap it on the fridge door. As soon as you get home, write down everything you got, and a quick count of each item, and you'll never again find a sad, brown head of lettuce abandoned in the oubliette of your crisper drawer.
Picture
Make a map of your refrigerator
It sounds silly, but it works. Label a Post-it® Super Sticky Note for each major area of your fridge – top shelf, middle shelf, bottom shelf, left drawer, right drawer – and put it them all on the fridge door. When you put the produce away, write where each thing lives on the appropriate note. Then, when you're wondering what to make for dinner – or just trying to find the radishes you were sure you bought – you'll know exactly where to look.
Picture
Plan a menu
Don't just throw up your hands in despair at all of the celeriac you've got no idea how to use – do some internet sleuthing and see if you can find something new and exciting to make with it. Once you've made a list or map of your produce, you're well armed for a good recipe search, and planning out a menu will help you get every last milligram of vitamins out of those leafy green veggies. Keep track of your ideas on a Post-it® Super Sticky List Note (It's got lines and everything. We're just that good.) on the fridge door – if you're lucky, maybe some helpful family members will contribute a few ideas, too. (No, pizza every night does not count as being helpful.)

With a little organization, you can control your veggies – instead of your veggies controlling you.

Celebrating Flag Day

6/14/2016

June 14th, Flag Dag commemorates the original thirteen colonies secession from Great Britain. One of the first things the colonies looked to accomplish was the establishment of a flag they could call their own.

What Does The American Flag Symbolize?
Although there is some confusion regarding who designed the American flag, the meaning behind it has never wavered and is best explained by looking at what the colors stand for.
  • Red: Signifies durability and valor (courage)
  • White: Signifies purity and innocence
  • Blue: Vigilance, perseverance/ determination, and justice

Celebrating Flag Day in the Workplace
Flag Day provides companies and businesses throughout the United States with the opportunity to honor everything the flag stands for. While many businesses will proudly display the flag on Flag Day, others may want to take it a step further.  If you own or run a company, you may want to honor your employees who have proudly fought for our country.

Blunote 2.0 Portable Wireless Bluetooth Spea
ker

2x5 watt speakers and rechargeable 1000 Lithium battery for long playing enjoyment. Pause/play/answer calls, next track, back track and volume controls can be controlled by your device.

PUMP UP THE VOLUME
WITH THE SPRACHT BLUN
OTE 2.0

The manufacturer describes this product as a professional telephone-conferencing device that also offers full-range music playback from MP3/iPad players or Bluetooth enabled computers, tablets and smart phones. Sounds impressive. Let's take it for a test drive.

The blunote 2.0 certainly looks sharp with its curved black and silver compact design. Controls are located on the top of the unit and includes play/pause, last track and volume controls as well as an accept/hang up call button. Pressing and holding the power button for two seconds activates the Bluetooth pairing mode. Syncing up an android smartphone was a breeze. We listened to an eclectic mix of music that ranged from Moby to the Benny Goodman Orchestra to the Alabama Shakes and have to give props to the quality of the sound. This mini speaker pumps out 10 watts of clear and dynamic sounding music.

Next we tested out how this little device handled phone calls. Was it clear or did it sounds like Charlie Brown's teacher? Have to say that again, we were impressed. Operationally, the blunote 2.0 functioned flawlessly as a speaker phone and the sound was crystal clear.

To sum things up, we were very impressed with the quality and performance of the Spracht blunote 2.0. The unit includes a 3.5mm audio cable, USB charging cable and a very clear and helpful user guide. They only downside we could find is that we had to give it back when we were done with our review. Sad face emoji, but 5 stars for the blunote 2.0!

Father's Day and Graduations Oh My...

6/7/2016

Father’s Day and graduation parties are usually the first two signs of summer. Have you started thinking about what to get? Since Father’s Day and graduation parties tend to coincide around the same time, here are a few different gift ideas for the dads and grads in your life.
Picture
For the High School Grad Going to College

An External Hard Drive

This is a great gift for those who plan on saving files that take up significant space. If you know that your gift recipient will be using both a Mac and PC, try to look for one that works with both right off the bat. He or she will have to reformat it if you get a model that works only with one OS if they plan on using it for both.

A Small Whiteboard
Whether it serves as reminders for important projects, or to let someone’s roommates know when they are around, a small whiteboard is a great thing to have if your gift recipient will live in a dormitory.

A Printer
The person with the printer in their room will be the most popular person on their floor. If you know someone at college, ask them how tough it is to find a color printer the next time you see them.

A Reusable Water Bottle
Go eco-friendly! A reusable water bottle can be used both in and out of the office. Perfect for the person who is always on the go.

A Planner
Planners go a long way, no matter what field your gift recipient works in. You can never have too many places to write down a schedule.

A Laptop Bag
The same backpack that got them through college might not work once they enter the “real world.” Consider gifting a laptop bag for them if their work is done on a computer.

For Dad

A Pen
Cross Cross Bailey Collection Ballpont pens provide one of the best writing experiences. They tend to write smoother and consistent messages, not leaving blotchy spots on the paper.

A Unique Desk Organizer
If your father/husband is always losing pens and other office supplies, consider getting him a unique organizer to keep things together.

Memories
A personal gift will always be something he will cherish. Go through memory lane and look at photos that you have of you and your father and find a nice frame for it.
